Information about GRIMSBY Situated in North-East Lincolnshire on the banks of the Humber Estuary, Grimsby started life as a Viking settlement. It remained little more than an isolated fishing port until the 1800’s when the advent of the railways and massive investment in the commercial and fish docks brought about a rapid transformation in the town’s fortunes. So much so that by the middle of the 20th century, Grimsby boasted the largest fishing port in the world. The town also had the largest area of cold-storage in the world, and it was this which saved the town from ruin. The demise of the fishing industry in the 1970’s coincided with the introduction of frozen foods into our diets, and Grimsby was perfectly placed to profit from this new industry. Food production remains the town’s prime source of income, but fishing is what Grimsby will always be known for, and is how the character of the town is still defined. Attractions include the National Fishing Heritage Museum, the nearby coastal resort of Cleethorpes, as well as numerous public parks which were donated to the town by wealthy benefactors. The most popular of these is Weelsby Woods, with all manner of wildlife and stoned circles. When Saturday comes, the local population can be found at Blundell Park, home to “The Mariners”-Grimsby Town Football Club. This magnificent stadium has great food and fantastic views of The Humber. And some football.
